1. Reverb and Effects
Reverb can be great, but only when it is used in conjunction with your samples. Reverb can be used to mix samples with other reverb. You should not do this. To put it another way, a loud bass line will make you sound as active as Bugs Bunny on crack. This is why you need to use slow synths or pads. This dynamic shifts and your bass becomes slow, so you can adjust the dynamics and lead to compliment it. Because the human mind cannot distinguish all sounds, it is important not to over-saturate your music. Dubstep is messy, but that doesn’t mean you need to cover the whole soundscape. Compare the dynamics of each instrument on the track to know when to make it louder or less.
3. You can experiment with octaves.
A brilliant Dubstep trick involves having the fourth and eighth notes of a bass or lead played one octave above or below, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. This creates a “freak” note within your production that gives it that special touch. Dubstep is an entirely new genre. If you want to create Dubstep, you must appeal to its strange and unique sound signature. Try to experiment with different octaves as you create a sequence to give it that extra edge.
