ENGLISH

The total communications curriculum embraces the areas of English (literature, composition, and speech) and journalism. The chief objectives of the communications curriculum are to aid the students in acquiring facts and concepts of literature through the skills of reading, listening and viewing, and to help the students acquire methods of communication through speech and writing, while encouraging creativity of expression. The department operates under the whole language philosophy of the integration of writing, reading, speaking and listening skills. Therefore, Providence High School English students write in various modes, purposes and for a variety of audiences. All genres of literature are presented, taught, and used as models for student writing experiences because the department believes that the connection between writing and reading forms the basis for writing instruction and for literature appreciation.

FINE ARTS

The visual and performing arts curriculum strives to create an awareness and appreciation of the arts. Four basic strands—perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation—provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Students have an opportunity to develop and express their personal creative abilities through art, photography, dance, theatre, musical theatre, choir and band. For truly exceptional students, there is the opportunity for independent study.

LANGUAGE

The Foreign Language Department offers a program crafted to maximize the students’ linguistic abilities through a combination of speaking, reading, writing, and listening activities. This preparation is necessary in order to compete in a changing world community in which bilingual skills are required. Completion of the program may enable a student to carry college level credit into the colleges of their choice or to receive credit through the CLEP/advanced placement exam.

MATH

The mathematics curriculum seeks to prepare the student for today's mathematically dependent society by offering a wide variety of courses. Program offerings include the traditional triad of algebra, geometry and functions as well as other courses to prepare students for upper level science courses and college math. In all math courses, students are given numerous opportunities to solve a variety of problems in context. All students are required to purchase their own scientific calculator.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The primary objective of the PE department is to have each student involved in physical activity. The curriculum is based around several sports in which the students will learn all aspects of each sport. The health course stresses the importance of the physical activity as well as educating students on their health and possible health problems. All students enrolled in Physical Education classes must have a current health record and state required immunization record on file in the nurse's office. For graduation each student needs 1.5 credits in PE and 0.5 in Health. Students may take only one Physical Education class per semester.

RELIGION

The philosophy of the Religion Department of Providence High School is to provide basic information regarding the Catholic faith and Christian principles with the view of aiding students to become knowledgeable, correctly informed persons who actively participate in liturgical and paraliturgical experiences. Along with the faith community of Providence High School and the local community, students are encouraged to contribute to the development and realization of Christian living which is authentic , vital and apostolic.

SCIENCE

The general objectives of the Science Department are to encourage and reinforce natural curiosity concerning the world about us, to train the students in problem solving by inquiry and logic, and to develop within the student a background in science which will enable her to become a responsible, informed citizen. All science courses are laboratory oriented and are focused on laboratory and field activities.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The Social Studies curriculum is designed to allow the student to obtain a solid background in Geography, World History, U.S. History and Government. The chief objective of the curriculum is to put the student in touch with the realities of the world in which she lives, acquiring facts and concepts and challenging her to analyze and respond creatively to this world in a concerned way.

TECHNOLOGY

Using a windows-based operating system, students learn end-user software skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, and desktop publishing or programming. Students also learn computer networking concepts, basic computer repair techniques and configuration of many software operating systems. The chief objective is to provide students with the computer skills necessary to function proficiently in a technology-dominated society. One credit of computers is required for graduation.
