High School Foreign Language: The
Language Department concentrates on improving the student's ability to
communicate with foreign language speakers through the written and spoken
word. In the Spanish and French courses, the student is helped to become
familiar with and appreciate the tradition and cultures of those people.
For graduation, Providence requires two (2) years of the same foreign
language.
Preparatory Foreign Language:
Ancient Civilizations and pre-Latin
is offered to sixth grade students. In this course they learn about
the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians and their contributions to
our modern world. They are also introduced to the formal study of a
foreign language—Latin—and the study of Greek and Latin roots of
modern English words. Foreign Language options for seventh and eighth graders include
Latin, Spanish and French. Students who successfully complete two years
of the same language receive a shared credit for Providence High School
and will be enrolled as a fresh(wo)man in Latin II, Spanish II, or
French II.
